Professor of Environmental Epidemiology and Acting Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Occupational Health at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health (UOEH), Kitakyushu, Japan. He graduated the School of Medicine of Keio University in 1983, received his Ph.D. from UOEH and M.P.H. from the University of Pittsburgh. He has been devoting most of his professional career to epidemiologic research of occupational diseases, with special interest on occupational lung diseases, and asbestos diseases in particular. He has served as consultant and advisor to WHO and ILO, as well as examiner and advisor to academic institutes of several Asian countries. He is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health [Editor] and Occupational Medicine (Oxford)[International Board]. He has served two terms as Board Member of the International Commission of Occupational Health (ICOH).
