Ramos-Bonilla Juan Pablo

E-mail: jramos@uniandes.edu.co

Dr. Juan Pablo Ramos-Bonilla is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Universidad de los Andes in Bogot? Colombia. He studied Civil Engineering at Universidad de los Andes and earned a Master of Environmental Management degree at Duke University (Durham, NC, USA), and a Ph.D. from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD, USA). After finishing his Ph.D., he returned to Colombia to contribute in the understanding at the local level of the association between exposure to occupational and environmental contaminants and adverse health effects. Most of his research in Colombia has been focused on analyzing and documenting the risks derived from asbestos production and consumption.

Dr. Ramos-Bonilla has worked with vulnerable low-income brake mechanics, studying in great detail asbestos exposures experienced by these workers because of the manipulation of asbestos containing brake and transmission products. He has also lead research initiatives to conduct respiratory health evaluations of a cohort of 56 auto-mechanics who have been occupationally exposed to asbestos. These studies have shown the deplorable working conditions and health risks experienced by auto-mechanics. In recent years, Dr. Ramos-Bonilla has openly supported regulatory initiatives to ban asbestos in Colombia, actively participating in the debates at the Colombian Senate and in different academic and non-academic events. Dr. Ramos-Bonilla also lead the first peer-reviewed study in Colombia analyzing the presence of chlorine pesticides in breast milk samples of extremely poor women from Bogot?, and the first peer-reviewed study of the presence of lead in paint of toys commercialized in Colombia.
