Building Environmental and Occupational Health Capacity in Albania

The 4th International Conference on Public Health and Environment was convened on 22-23 June 2026 at the Academy of Sciences of Albania in Tirana, in collaboration with George Mason University and the Collegium Ramazzini. The meeting continued a growing international platform focused on the intersection of environmental science, public health, occupational health, food and water safety, climate resilience, and environmental risk prevention.

The Collegium Ramazzini has supported this effort from the beginning. Over the years, nearly 20 Collegium Ramazzini Fellows have participated in the Albania meetings, along with many distinguished international scientists. Their participation has helped connect Albanian colleagues with international expertise in occupational medicine, epidemiology, toxicology, environmental health, cancer prevention, chemical risk assessment, and policy-oriented public health science. 

This sustained engagement is already producing visible capacity-building impact. At the first conference, most presenters came from outside Albania. That early exchange was important: it helped model scientific presentation, peer dialogue, international collaboration, and the value of linking environmental evidence to public and occupational health policy. Four meetings later, the balance has shifted in a highly encouraging direction. At the 2026 conference, most presenters were Albanian scientists, clinicians, public health professionals, university faculty, students, and institutional partners, with international Fellows contributing as collaborators, mentors, discussants, and scientific peers.

The 2026 program reflected a broad and increasingly mature environmental public health agenda. Presentations addressed population health and policy, infectious disease surveillance, vaccine hesitancy, noncommunicable disease information systems, artificial intelligence, air quality, indoor air quality in schools, PM2.5 modeling, roadside vegetation and traffic microenvironments, seasonal allergy and environmental drivers, climate-change detection, food safety, pesticide residues, heavy metals, water quality, drinking water legislation, wastewater contaminants, open burning of plastic waste, surface-water pesticide monitoring, antimicrobial resistance, soil contamination, lead exposure, oil extraction, and environmental risks in protected natural areas. 

The meeting also highlighted the importance of strengthening Albania’s scientific and institutional capacity as the country advances toward European Union integration. For this reason, the conference is increasingly important not only as a scientific meeting, but also as a platform for policy-relevant environmental and occupational health capacity in Albania and the broader Balkans.

The Collegium Ramazzini congratulates our Fellow Melissa Perry who during the conference received the Honorary Member Award by the Academy of Science of Albania for her leadership and contribution in advancing public health in Albania. 

Looking ahead, organizers hope to grow, build, and expand this collaboration with a stronger focus on environmental and occupational health policy, regulatory implementation, and enforcement across Albania and the region. Plans are already being considered for next year’s meeting.
